SAXOJO

an album of saxophones and banjos

SAXOJO explores combining saxophones (alto, tenor and baritone) with banjos (5-string American banjo and 4-string Brazilian cavaco banjo) across multiple music styles. It features 10 original compositions by Kevin Pike, plus 5 reimagined versions of songs by Katy Perry, The Smashing Pumpkins, Stevie Wonder, Charli XCX and Wayne Shorter.

During the pandemic, Pike’s “happy place” was creating solo banjo versions of pop and rock songs. He released the album Songs in the Key of Banjo under artist name Banjo Cat in 2021. SAXOJO merges what Pike learned on banjo with his saxophone playing in styles ranging from latin jazz and instrumental funk to contemporary classical and roots/blues. Pike also plays bass and percussion on the album. SAXOJO is Kevin Pike’s 20th album release.
